Multiclass & Special Olympics Snowsport Events

Join the Interschools Snowsport Championships – Multiclass Event to experience competitive snowsports and to participate at either a recreational or competitive level. The Multiclass and Special Olympics (SO) events provide an opportunity for people of all ages with a physical or intellectual impairment to participate in a fun and welcoming environment. Participants can compete in an Alpine GS or Snowboard GS event.

Following the continued success of multi-class events in 2023, the inclusive events return better than ever in 2024!

The Interschools Multiclass Events provide an exciting opportunity for school students with physical impairments to showcase their talents in the snow sports disciplines of Alpine GS and Snowboard GS. Hosted on 3 dates throughout the season, 26 July during the ACT & Regional NSW Interschools Championships, 21 August during the State (NSW and VIC) Interschools Championships and September 6 during the National Interschools Championships, these events offer an inclusive platform for competitors to participate and excel with the excitement and support of the wider Interschools Snowsports event.

In 2024 there will also be an Open division to allow para-athletes who are not currently in school, to compete, providing an opportunity to test their skills in a fun and inclusive racing environment.

Information and education about Provisional Classification will be offered to all PI and VI participants.

Be sure to hang out after your race to cheer all the athletes across the line.  There will be a meet and greet with the current National Para Alpine and Snowboard team at the medal presentation to celebrate the day’s racing.

Divisioning

Multiclass and SO divisions are designed to include participants with physical impairments, intellectual impairments and autism. A Multiclass participant’s disability is recognised via classifications defined by School Sport Australia, Paralympics Australia, and Sport Inclusion Australia.

Multiclass event divisions replicate existing mainstream Interschools ski and snowboard events, in that they are based on school year and gender, with both individual and school team races across all divisions. This also applies to SO skiers and snowboarders. Additionally, Multiclass and SO divisioning is further broken down into two subdivisions:

  • Physical Impairment which includes participants with motor, visual or hearing impairment
  • Intellectual Impairment and Autism which includes participants with a Full-Scale IQ score of 75 and lower, and limitations in adaptive behaviour; or those with a formal diagnosis of Autism, ASD, or Asperger’s syndrome.
