Award Winner Profiles

 

Service to Snowsports

Allan Marsland

Allan Marsland has been involved with cross country skiing at local, state, national, and international levels since 1970, holding the position of Chair of the National Cross Country Committee from 1993 to 1996. 

Marsland was involved with Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club, helping to navigate the establishment of the only Southern Hemisphere event in the Worldloppet series. Marsland was also the Race Director of Kangaroo Hoppet from 1991 for over ten years, now holding the role of Chair of the committee for the past decade. 

Service to Snowsports

David Frydmann

David Frydman played a pioneering role in establishing freestyle skiing in Australia, founding the country’s most successful freestyle ski team at Mt Buller. 

Frydman held the position of Chair of the National Freestyle Committee through the mid 1990s and early 2000s. During this time he helped steer freestyle skiing into a prominent position, achieving significant success nationally and internationally, securing FIS World Cup victories, Olympic gold medals and numerous accolades.

Service to Snowsports

Cliff Mason

Cliff Mason has dedicated over 20 years to snowsports administration, having held numerous roles and positions within the National Alpine Committee including two terms as Chair from 1997-2001 and 2007-2008. 

Mason has been an integral figure within the sport, having received the Australian Sports Medal for service to snowsport in 2000 for his efforts. 

At an international level, Mason represented Australia on various alpine sub-committees of the
International Ski Federation attending 18 overseas FIS conferences and meetings.

Club Coach

Steve McGill

Steve McGill has been involved in snowboard coaching for over 35 years, having been drawn to the role as a way to spend more time on snow. 

His coaching success as Perisher Winter Sports Club Snowboard Cross Coach is credited to his holistic approach to learning, ensuring that the participant enjoys their time on the snow. 

His passion for seeing athletes achieve their goals is what keeps McGill committed and engaged. He recently guided Maya Billingham on building her resilience ahead of Interschools, leading to her clean sweep of events. 

Pathway Club

Turn & Burn

Based in Thredbo, Turn & Burn was established six years ago to provide inclusive programs for all levels in several disciplines, assisting athletes with off-snow readiness. 

Recently, Turn & Burn collaborated with Thredbo Mountain Academy to successfully deliver year-round coaching, yielding excellent results. 

Several of Snow Australia’s Emerging Talent Program athletes have participated in Turn & Burn programs along with members of the Junior World Championships team. 

Ryan Tiene, Turn & Burn head coach and founder, recently coached member Ally Hickman to third place in Slopestyle at the the Junior World Championships.

Zoe Jaboor

Zoe Jaboor has been involved with Snow Australia as a FIS accredited Mogul and Aerial Skiing judge for over 15 years, adjudicating events both nationally and internationally including the Olympic Games. 

Following a stint on the sidelines due to injury, Jaboor's first foray into judging was at Interschools when she was 18. The experience sparked a passion for the role, with Jaboor sharing her delight at receiving recognition. 

Within her role as Coordinator of Judges, Jaboor is responsible for training and development of future judges, organising clinics for prospective officials to attend. 

Young Achiever

Gus Johnstone

Gus Johnstone has been identified as a consistent performer at all events he entered over the season. Known to both his junior and senior teammates at Team Hotham as a positive and hard-working role model, he is a high achiever both on and off the snow. 

Johnstone’s on snow achievements this season reflected his hard work and dedication, with improvement in both speed and finish rate helping to secure first place in the Division 2 Alpine and Ski Cross at the 2023 Victorian Interschools Championships. At the Australian Children’s Carnival, he had two first places and two second places in the Slalom.

 

Spirit of Interschools

Maeve Tobias

As the XC Ski Captain for her school, Maeve fostered a positive and inclusive team spirit, sharing her sense of adventure, strong mindset, camaraderie and enthusiasm. Her willingness to give her time generously to girls of all ages and always help out the beginners through their training sessions contributed to creating tight bonds amongst her team members.

Maeve was also instrumental in recruiting large numbers to her team this year, more than doubling the Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School Cross-country skiing team roster from 14 to a whopping 34 competitors for 2023. As part of her recruitment efforts, she presented a short highlights video at an information night for parents and students of all year levels, creating so much interest that the school had record numbers turn up to the first training session.

Narrabeen North PS

Narrabeen North Public School has delivered an exceptional parent volunteer program to support students at the school who are interested in experiencing snow sports, with 17 students joining the team.  

Narrabeen North Public School efforts have been rewarded with several impressive placings over the past few years, including placing second in 2019 at regionals.
