SSA National Coaching Accreditation Scheme

SSA is pleased to offer coaches the opportunity to develop and gain qualifications as part of a National Coach Accreditation Scheme (NCAS). The SSA SKI Coach Level 1 and SSA SNOWBOARD Coach Level 1 course have recently received approval and endorsement from the Australian Sports Commission and courses are being delivered at various resorts throughout the 2012 winter season via our service provider - Australian Professional Snow Instructors (APSI).

The Level 1 courses are aimed at up-skilling coaches that are working with athletes at the 'FUNdamentals' and 'Learn to Train' phases of the Athlete Pathway and will form the foundation of a coach pathway which provides each skiing/ snowboarding discipline the opportunity to develop higher levels of coach training and accreditation.

The SSA Coach pathway and in particular the Level 1 courses provide a much needed sport/ competition specific emphasis to the development of our grass-roots, Interschools and entry level SSA Pathway Program athletes. Through aligning the coach pathway with each discipline's Long Term Athlete Development model (LTAD) it will enable a consistent and unified approach to sports programming and athlete development.

The courses will provide existing coaches and high level APSI Instructors (minimum Level 2 required as a prerequisite) the opportunity to develop their coaching ability and further their qualification, while also enabling athletes and those from a sports background to remain involved in the sport.

Accreditation Program Description

On successful completion of this course, a Level 1 Ski/Snowboard Coach will be able to:

  • Explain the roles and ethical responsibilities of the coach.
  • Assess and manage the risks of coaching.
  • Plan and organise a safe, enjoyable and efficient training session appropriate to entry level athletes.
  • Develop strategies to work and communicate effectively with parents, officials and resort personnel.
  • Utilise a range of communication, teaching and behaviour management strategies to help athletes learn basic skiing skills and tactics consistent with the appropriate phase of the SSA LTAD model.
  • Develop fundamental skiing drills and tactics for entry level athletes.
  • Provide feedback relevant to the discipline to skiers regarding basic technique, consistent with the appropriate phase of the relevant discipline SSA LTAD.
  • Cater for the physical and social development of athletes consistent with the appropriate phase of the SSA LTAD model.
  • Understand the basic competition rules of the disciplines included in this course.
  • Maintain appropriate course set and terrain for the disciplines included in this course.

Assessment Tasks

Candidates will have all course competencies assessed via 4 overlapping methods.

  1. Online General Principle’s course will provide an assessment of competencies in the generic coaching components.
  2. During the course candidates will be given the chance to demonstrate various skills appropriate to their chosen discipline. During these demonstrations, assessors will monitor and interject at times to formatively assess various competencies, primarily involved in skill demonstration appropriate to entry level athletes.
  3. During the course a practical coaching scenario will be provided to groups for discussion and role play to demonstrate coaching of technical components. Each group will be given time to discuss their scenario during the course in order to present the best solution. The assessors will monitor and interject in these discussions at times to formatively assess various competencies, primarily involved in communication, technical, safety and coaching issues.
  4. Candidates will be required to provide logged ‘post course coaching practice’ within their chosen field of coaching signed by an approved mentor
