Anthony Bonaccurso
1975 -
Discipline: Para Alpine Anthony Bonaccurso is one of the seven Australian Paralympians to have competed at both Winter and Summer Games, a prestigious group of athletes that also includes Michael Milton, Jessica Gallagher and Kyrra Grunnsund. Born in Sunshine, Victoria, in 1975, Anthony took up wheelchair tennis after suffering spinal injuries in a tragic accident in 1993. In 1998 he took a break from his tennis career to represent Australia at the 1998 Nagano Paralympic Winter Games. Competing in the LW11 class, he finished 17th in the slalom as his best result, following up with a 20th place finish in the Super-G. After the Winter Games, he returned to wheelchair tennis, rapidly climbing in the world’s top-20. He was selected to the Australian team who traveled to Athens for the 2004 Paralympic Games, where he won the bronze medal in the men’s doubles, in partnership with David Hall. In his wheelchair tennis career Bonaccurso also achieved an impressive streak of six consecutive Victorian Hardcourt Championships titles and was a member of the Australian team that won the World Team Cup in Italy in 2002. Now retired from competition, he now coaches both wheelchair and able-bodied tennis players. |
