Ben Sim grew up in Cooma and was on skis before he could walk properly. His parents and older sisters used to back county tour every weekend during winter. He won his first Australian Championships at 17 years old and made his international debut soon after. 2003 was his breakthrough year, qualifying to represent his country in the World Championships at Val di Fiemme, Italy. At 18, he was one of the youngest skiers in the 15km race, in which he placed 66th.

He made his World Cup debut in 2004 in Czech. He would go on to make 41 other World Cup appearances over 5 years. His best World Cup finish was 16th in the team sprint event at Whistler Olympic Park in January 2009. Ben set history with his best individual result with a 30th in the 15km skate in Beitostoelen, Norway, becoming the first Australian cross country skier to earn distance points in a World Cup.

Ben made 5 World Championships appearances. His best finish was 13th place in the team sprint in February 2009 in Liberec, Czech.

Locally, Ben won the Kangaroo Hoppet 4 times.

At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, he made his debut and finished 20th in the team sprint, 45th in the 15 km, and 47th in the 15 km + 15 km double pursuit event.

Ben credits his coach, Nick Almoukov, along with Finn Marsland, and Chris ‘Darlo’ Darlington for supporting him throughout his cross country skiing career.
