Emily Rahles-Rahbula
Discipline: Para Alpine Paralympic Participation: Torino 2006 Thirty years after the first winter Paralympics, Emily (nee Jansen) became Australia’s first female winter Paralympian at the Torino winter Paralympics. Emily competed in the technical events, the giant slalom and the slalom. Emily was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer in her second year of university in 1997, which resulted in the loss of her right leg above the knee. After her amputation, Emily took up wheelchair basketball and skiing. Emily was spotted skiing with her family in Mount Buller and invited to attend a talent identification camp before joining the Australian Winter Paralympic squad in 2004. She competed as a single above the knee amputee (LW2). In 2005, Emily competed for Australia for the first time and won two bronze medals in the giant slalom and super giant slalom in the NorAm and Europa Cup seasons. At Torino, she completed in the Giant Slalom Standing where she placed 21st and did not finish the Women's Slalom Standing. |
