James Matheson first tried mogul skiing when he competed at Interschools representing The Scots College - he instantly fell in love with the sport.

At 11 years of age, James joined the Perisher Winter Sports Club’s moguls program. He was offered a scholarship with NSWIS four years later and training under head coach Peter Topalovic, James continued to develop his skills.

He made his World Cup debut at Deer Valley in 2013.

After returning to the North American cup tour for two seasons, James achieved multiple top-five performances and a bronze medal in Val Saint-Come, Canada. With those results he qualified to the make the step to his first full season on the World Cup tour in 2016-17.

During that season he competed at the PyeongChang Olympic test event where he placed 21^st and went on to qualify for his first World Championships in Sierra Nevada, Spain.

During the 2017-18 World Cup tour, James recorded a personal best of seventh place at the Thaiwo (China) World Cup.

At 22 years old James made his Olympic debut in PyeongChang at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games and advanced from the second qualification run into Final 1. He was two places shy of moving through to the second final with his score of 73.96 and was Australia’s second best placed male mogul skier in 14^th overall. Teammate Matt Graham won the silver medal in the event.

Following the Olympics James showed more strong performances with a sixth-place finish at the 2018 Thaiwoo (China) World Cup and nineth at the 2019 Calgary (Canada) World Cup.

On the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 World Cup tours he achieved multiple top 20 results in highly competitive fields. His results included an eighth place finish in dual moguls at the 2020 Deer Valley (USA) World Cup and a 16^th place finish at the 2020 Idre Fjall (SWE) World Cup.

After a long and pandemic affected 2020-2021 season, James contested his third World Championships in March 2021.

At the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games he just missed out on qualifying for Final 1 finishing 24^th.
