Nate honed his snowboarding skills on the slopes of Perisher. He made his World Cup debut in 2006. His first World Cup podium win came in 2008 with a bronze in Stoneham. The next season of 2008/2009 bought two more podium results, with a bronze in Bardonecchia, and silver in Valmalenco, Italy. He finished the season ranked second in the world.

Nate was two weeks out from competing at the 2010 Winter Olympics as the world number two snowboard halfpipe rider when he suffered an ankle injury in training and had to withdraw from the Games.

In his first International event back from his injury In January 2011, the World Championships, he won on the same day that team mate Holy Crawford won the female event. They both became the first male and female to win the Halfpipe Championships. 

He won the World Cup crystal globe after winning two World Cup gold medals, along with a silver medal in Calgary.

Nate went on to win three more gold medals at World Cup. Throughout his career, he had 8 World Cup podium wins, including 4 gold medals, from 34 World Cup starts.

He just missed the finals at his Olympic debut at Sochi, finishing 13th overall.
