Sami Kennedy-Sim
1988 -
Discipline: Ski Cross Sami Kennedy-Sim began her skiing career in alpine making the switch to Ski Cross in 2008. Following her World Cup debut in 2008, she continued to improve and climb the ranks on the World Cup circuit. During her career, she would go on to compete in 124 World Cups, 5 World Championships and 3 Olympic Winter Games. After achieving her first World Cup top 10 result in 2011, she went on to claim five top ten results and finished the tour ranked 11th in the world in the 2011-12 season. As a 24-year-old in 2013 Sami suffered an infarct stroke. Remarkably a few months after the stroke, she slowly returned to light training and eventually full-time training. She has since become an ambassador for the National Stroke Foundation, raising awareness of strokes in young people. Kennedy-Sim returned to World Cup competition in December 2013 and a month later achieved a personal-best result of fourth place in Val Thorens. Later that season she competed in her debut Olympic Games in Sochi where she placed 28th. At the World Championships in 2015 in Kreischberg she placed 12th. After multiple top-eight finishes over the next couple of years, Kennedy-Sim claimed her first World Cup podium medal with a silver at Idre Fjall. Competing at her second Olympics at PyeongChang she narrowly missed a spot in the big final and ultimately finished in 8th place. She started the 2020-2021 season on a positive note, claiming a bronze medal and a sixth-place finish before unfortunately suffering a season-ending injury. A year later she returned to the World Cup tour before competing in her third Olympics later in the season. At Beijing Kennedy-Sim won both her 1/8 final and quarter-final. Placing fourth in the semi-final took her to the small final where she placed 8th, a repeat placing from the previous Games. Kennedy-Sim was selected as the Australian team flagbearer for the closing ceremony. Kennedy-Sim is married to fellow Olympian and Cross Country skier, Ben Sim. |
