Australia will field its largest team in a decade when the FIS Nordic Ski World Championships start later this week in Trondheim, Norway.
Ten athletes have been selected to take part in the event, including three Winter Olympians and four athletes making their World Championships debut. For triple Winter Olympian Phillip Bellingham, this will be his seventh World Championship appearance.
Bellingham said he is looking forward to racing at a venue where the crowd is intensely passionate about cross country skiing.
“The atmosphere at Trondheim should be amazing and I'm looking forward to racing there as part of a team that is really taking big steps up and getting stronger by the day,” said Bellingham. “The young athletes are motivating to be around and they keep me young at heart.
Bentley Walker-Broose, Fedele de Campo and Liam Burton will be competing at the event for the first time along with Rosie Fordham who is full of confidence following her silver medal at the World U23 Championships in Italy earlier this month.
“I’m looking forward to experiencing my world champs debut in the electric atmosphere that will be in Trondheim. I’ve been in good form this season and hoping to carry that through to some quality results at this world championships.
Nine out of ten of the team have been racing regularly on World Cup this season. Lars Young Vik, Phoebe Cridland, Ellen-Soehol Lie and Seve de Campo competed at the 2023 World Championship in Planica, while Tuva Bygrave raced at the 2021 World Champs in Oberstdorf.
Snow Australia Cross Country Skiing Program Director Finn Marsland joins the support team in Trondheim, alongside head coach Alexei Sotskov and German wax technicians Fabian Mauz, Toni Escher and Leopold Hensler.
“I'm stoked to be in Trondheim with this young team that has so much enthusiasm and potential,” said Finn Marsland, who competed at the 1997 World Championships at the same venue.
“The Team Sprint is a key targeted event at these championships, in which we aim to make the finals (top 15) for the first time. We also plan to enter women’s and men’s relay teams, which will be the first Australian women's relay team at a World Championships since 2017 and the first men’s team since 2011.”
