All in… Hamish Cox has never looked back after taking up coaching

Most people remember their first Club coach and earlier this month Snow Australia recognised one Club coach giving back to the sport in a big way… Hamish Cox.

His family name is well known in the snow sports community, with sister Britt Cox a triple Winter Olympian, while Hamish is carving a name for himself as he ushers through the next generation of mogul skiers.

Currently a member of the Snow Australia National Freestyle Committee, Cox is also the Head Coach of the Team Buller Riders.

Making the transition from athlete to coach in 2009, Hamish’s deciating to coaching made him the worthy recipient of the Club Coach of the Year at the 2019 Snow Australia Community Sport Awards.

“Mogul skiing clubs in Australia at the time were growing quickly but there was a shortage of coaches, especially coaches with experience in the sport as an athlete,” Hamish said.

“Toppa (Peter Topalovic) encouraged me to get involved in coaching and I took to it pretty quickly and decided right away I was all in,” he added.

Hamish was proud to be rewarded for his hard work as a coach and mentor at Team Buller Riders.

“It’s quite an honour to receive this award because I think Australia has a handful of very high quality coaches working in our winter sports club programs,” he said.

“In Australia we are very fortunate to have such a fluid link through the entire snowsport athlete pathway in snowsports,” Hamish said.

“I enjoy working in the sport mostly because this structure has allowed me to develop as a coach and to do a better job that I believe I may have been able to do elsewhere.”
