Alpine Director Update - August 2023

Published Fri 11 Aug 2023

Dear Alpine Community,

While the winter may not be the best in recent memory the resorts have been doing a good job in keeping terrain open and allowing our athletes to get out on the snow. Just because we may not have our favourite training hills available to us does not mean there is still not valuable opportunity to work on our skiing skills and improve ourselves overall as athletes. As I have stated before, both perseverance and reliance are core traits of successful athletes, and this is a perfect opportunity to put these intangibles to use and find the positives and opportunities in our training.

I have had the opportunity over the last month to visit with Thredbo Ski Racing Club (TSRC) and be on snow for a skills assessment as well as present along with other Snow Australia staff an update to parents and provide an opportunity to engage and ask questions about the pathway.

Snow Australia also presented to Perisher Winter Sports Club families across all disciplines and enjoyed a good turn out and some great discussions. I also enjoyed a wonderful day of sunshine and racing last Saturday at the Blue Cow Cup, it was great see a solid turn out and athletes from Thredbo coming across to support the event.  See results HERE

I was invited by Thredbo Mountain Academy and the Dev Squad to come out for a weekend and engage with both young athletes and their coaches to practice and discuss the importance and value in skill development while challenging them to strive to become the best skiers that they can be.

At the end of July, I travelled to Falls Creek to ski with the Club and watch them train and enjoy some friendly competition against athletes from the Team Hotham Winter Sports Club. While the weather was challenging, and we were not able to complete some of the skills assessments which were planned, it was great to see so many out in the challenging conditions still trying their best with smiles on their faces and high fives all around.

Mt Hotham is my next stop to visit with the Club and be part of our Ski Cross Futures and ANC Ski Cross races this coming week. Snow conditions have been challenging however with the support of Hotham Resort I am sure we will have a great event with opportunity for athletes to train and compete alongside each other.

We are watching the weather closely and working with our resort partners to provide updates around upcoming events and these will be communicated in a timely manner.

Enjoy the sunny days and fingers crossed for some colder temperatures and top ups from mother nature.
