Alpine Events - Events Update
Published Fri 31 Jul 2020
It is with great disappointment that the National Alpine Committee (NAC) confirms that the following events will not be scheduled for the 2020 season.
- ANC – Alpine and Ski Cross event
- National Alpine Championships
- National Alpine Junior Championships
- Snow Australia Children’s Carnival
The NAC has been closely monitoring the Covid-19 restrictions and has made the decision in collaboration with the Australia Resorts and Clubs, as well as the Australian/New Zealand ANC committee.
This decision has been based on:
- The current Victorian stage 3 restrictions of residents of Melbourne and Mitchell Shire to stay home until at least 19 August, preventing a large majority of athletes unable to travel from or to Victoria.
- The NSW-Victoria border and hotspot restrictions. NSW has temporarily imposed border restrictions with Victoria.
- The Australian-New Zealand travel restrictions.
- The NSW Office of Sport has appropriately mandated that we:
- Take all reasonable steps to minimise the number of spectators attending community sports events, such as Interschool Snowsports.
- Ensure processes are in place to exclude participants (including spectators and officials) if they have attended any of the reported case locations listed on the NSW Health website, which currently totals 40 NSW locations. In addition, we must also minimise co-mingling of participants from different schools / regions, and ensure any spectators comply with 1.5 metres physical distance and have strategies in place to prevent those spectators from different schools / regions and event timeslots, co-mingling.
- The Vail Resorts decision to cease their ski-lifting operations for Mt Hotham Resort and Falls Creek Resort from 9 July until at least 19 August.
Additionally to the Government and Resort guidelines, requirements and restrictions, Snow Australia’s main priority is ensuring the safety, health and well-being of the athletes, coaches, parents, volunteers, spectators, workers and mountain communities is of absolute priority. Therefore, the NAC do not feel proceeding with the 2020 Alpine Events would be in the best interest of the sport and the community and we will move to plan the 2021 Alpine Event Season.
We would like to thank our Resorts, Clubs and Community for their support and patience during this challenging time and look forward to the 2021 Season.
