Alpine skiers commence Winter Youth Olympic Games campaign

With the Lausanne 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games underway, we’re taking the time to catch up with some of our athletes and talk about their journey to the games, who helped get them there and what they are hoping to achieve.
Kicking it off is Alpine Skier Joey Steggall, who overnight had his first race of the Youth Olympic Games.
After his Super-G, Joey took a moment to reflect on the privilege of being selected to represent Australia in Lausanne.
“I feel very lucky to be here, it feels good to get the first race out of the way - there’s less stress now,” Steggall said.
“I didn’t get the finish that I wanted, but my goal for the next race is to try my best and try and win,” he said.
Steggall, the nephew of Winter Olympian Zali Steggall, said that it was in fact his aunt who instilled the belief in him that he could achieve.
“She (Zali) made me believe that anything was possible, she’s the reason I’m here,” Steggall said.
“My dad and sister both snowboard, but I made the decision to take up skiing and I’m glad I did.”
Steggall is one of 20 Snow Australia athletes currently in Lausanne competing at the Winter Youth Olympics - click here to see the full team.
The 16-year-old is one of 15 NSW based athletes a part of the Australian team.
