ANOTHER MEDAL FOR PERRINE AT PARA ALPINE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Published Fri 25 Jan 2019
Mel Perrine together with her new sight guide Bobbi Kelly, have continued to clean up at the 2019 Para Alpine World Championships in Kranjska Gora, overnight securing a bronze medal in the Women’s Slalom.
Earlier in the week, Perrine and Kelli collected a silver medal in the Giant Slalom, with fellow Australian team mate Mitch Gourley also picking up a bronze medal yesterday.
Perrine looked poised to extend Farkasova’s near misses in the event, leading after the first run.
But she got caught in the gates at the very end of the second run. As the other competitors shouted words of encouragement from the finish line, Perrine hiked up to the ill-fated gate.
Despite being disappointed with the second run, Perrine, a dual bronze medalist from the 2018 PyeongChang Paralympic Winter Games, was pleased she had done enough to finish on the podium.
"First run felt great, we managed to put together a really solid, consistent run for the first one, so we were really happy with that coming first going into the second run,” said Perrine.
“I heard Bobbi screaming at me. I couldn’t hear anything but her,” Perrine said about her desperate attempt to save the race, which she and her guide Bobbi Kelly ultimately finished in third place.
“I am quite disappointed with the mistake, but happy with the rest of the skiing.
“Bobbi and I are working great together, it’s all there. We just got to put two complete runs together. We executed 95% of today. It was the last 5% that just didn’t get set.”
The 2019 Para Alpine World Championships will now move to Italy’s Sella Nevea, with Perrine and Kelli set to take on the Women's Downhill on 29 January, Women's Super Combine on 31 January and the Women's Super-G on 1 February.
The championships continue to run through to 1 February 2019, with Aussies Perrine and Kelli joined by fellow Aussies Mitch Gourley, Tori Pendergast, Sam Tait and Patrick Jensen with sight guide Zali Offord.
