Athlete Spotlight: Harvey Edmanson
Published Tue 24 May 2022
Each month the Snowboard Committee will put the spotlight on an Australian Snowboard athlete to learn more about them as they train and compete around the World. This month focuses on National Snowboard Team Member Harvey Edmanson.
My first European season was an incredible learning experience. At times it was very difficult to deal with non-ideal results, but if I step back and consider the strength of the field in an Olympic season, I am very proud of the progression I made, especially after having to take time off and being unable to travel.
My training was very positive and it allowed me to make huge steps in my riding. It also made me keener to work extra hard this season and take any opportunities available during the Australian winter to get ahead of everyone overseas.
Personally, I was honoured to represent Australia at the highest level, against the best in the world. It was encouraging to be right on the heels of top riders and understand where I need to be and what I need to do to be successful at that level.
Also having a team presence at the World Cup put Australia on the map as a competitive nation. It was beneficial to have Millie Bongiorno competing alongside me, as the European circuit can be a daunting experience, especially if you are alone and a long way from home. Having a team around allows athletes to relax and perform at their peak, the way they know they can, so I hope we’ll be able to grow an even bigger squad soon.
Looking forward to the Australian season, I will be working a small amount for a school, Scotch College, but that will only cover a few weekends and the Snowsport Interschools Championships. My other plans will be continuing my university studies around snowboarding and taking any opportunity I get to train.
Realistically, my goals for 2022/23 will be to consistently push into the European Cup top 10 and move into the World Cup top 30. A strong Australian winter will set me to be competitive right from the start of next season!
