The prestigious 2024 Virtus World Skiing Championship will be hosted in Zakopane, Poland this week with seven Australian skiers taking part.
Virtus, the International Sports Federation for athletes with intellectual impairments, hosted prestigious Virtus athletic events since 2016 - including the World Skiing Championships in 2016 and 2018 - with this year’s events seeing athletes contest the slalom, giant slalom and Super G events.
- The Australian team is:
- India Biesse-Fitton (VIC)
- Alex Cherny (VIC)
- Laura Flynn (VIC)
- Charlie Jones (VIC)
- Samantha Li (VIC)
- Evie Patterson (VIC)
- Millie Warbrick (QLD)
The athletes are supported by Snow Australia and Sport Inclusion Australia.
Like Olympic and Paralympic athletes to come before them, all members of the team have competed at Interschools, a rich nursery for Australian snowsports talent.
With preparation and for formalities out of the way, it is now time to get to the action and the athletes can’t wait to hit the start gate.
Training is done and opening ceremony was really great with all nations marching followed by traditional dancing from local group,” said Tom Hodges, Snow Australia Para Pathway Development Coach who is in Zakopane with the team.
“Virtus brings together athletes with from all over the world to complete at their highest level.
“The standard has been really impressive from all athletes, Australia included.”
