Australian athletes named for 2020 Whistler Cup
Published Fri 07 Feb 2020
Snow Australia would like to congratulate the athletes selected to the U16 Whistler Cup Team and recognise the U14 athletes who will be attending the Whistler Cup International Race Festival held 15-19 April 2020 in Whistler, Canada.
The event will provide a great opportunity for the aspiring junior athletes to gain international experience at a world renowned competition.
The Whistler Cup consists of a Race Festival for U14 athletes and FIS sanctioned races for U16 athletes competing in Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super G and Parallel Slalom.
As a sanctioned FIS event, the U16 athletes applied to Snow Australia via an expression of interest late last year. Using the International Children’s Competition criteria the National Alpine Selection committee reviewed and selected athletes who demonstrated a well-rounded potential to best perform at this event. Skills assessment data, club reports, coaches input and recommendations as well as results are all considered and important factors when considering each individual athlete ability to perform.
The U16 athletes are invited to attend a Team Preparation and Competition Camp, where they will be exposed to a competitive and supportive high-performance team environment. Our current Alpine Director, Shawn Fleming and other high performance coaches will help prepare athletes to compete at their potential by implementing key aspects of athlete preparation such as goal setting, reflection and on and off snow training.
The U14 Whistler Cup Event was open to all young athletes who submitted an expression of interest, currently within a club system, and who have had previous experience with competing in similar events. NSW/ACT/QLD Alpine will be supporting the U14 athletes with administration and logistics.
Snow Australia Alpine Director Shawn Fleming said that he’s attended the event many times, and each year is a great celebration of alpine.
“It’s a great experience for these young aspiring athletes and is a great opportunity as part of their athlete pathway,” Fleming said.
“This year the event celebrates 28 years of successful international ski racing at Whistler Blackcomb, with the event boasting a proud history of quality competition.
“Each of the junior athletes I’m confident will gain valuable experience which they can further use when competing back in Australia and as part of their snow sport development,” he said.
