Bright P-12 College in northeastern Victoria has been awarded the Outstanding School Achievement as part of the 2024 Snow Australia Community Sport Awards.

This award highlights an outstanding or unique school snowsports activity, program, or initiative, that grew and/or supported participation at the school level.

With their program running for 20 years, Bright P-12 College Assistant Principal Mathew Gray shared that the recognition is a humbling experience.

“This is a humbling acknowledgement for our students, families, staff and volunteer committee to receive this award,” Gray said.

“The program has been running for over 20 years, with over 1500 students involved in the education, passion and progression in skiing and snowboarding.

“Throughout the 20 year history our numbers have fluctuated between 70 to 130. Currently we have a majority of our participants coming from the junior primary, so we are looking strong for the years ahead.”

Reflecting on the year that was, Mathew shared that the schools love for competing at Interschools saw them have their strongest participation yet.

“2024 was our strongest Interschools participation for some time,” he said.

“It has been fantastic to see our student’s drive and commitment to showcasing their years of development on the state and national stage.”

In partnership with the Ski and Snowboard School, Bright P-12 College facilitates a 10-day formal on-snow training program at Mt Hotham that has strengthened the athletes’ skills and confidence ahead of competition.

“Our partnership with the Ski and Snowboard School at Hotham has been essential in forming connections of trust and mentorship between instructors and students,” Gray said.

“Throughout the season our students regularly create lasting relationships with the instructors which builds their passion for the sport and willingness to stretch their abilities, hence the increased confidence to attend the Interschools.

“Moving into 2025, our goals are to be inclusive of all abilities, providing a program that suits the point of need of each of our students.

“We have a strong volunteer parent committee that has new members. Making sure we have a smooth progression strategy ensures the sustainability of the program.

“And finally, we seek to provide a fun, safe program that instills a love of snowsports and the environment for future generations.”

Snow Australia would like to congratulate Bright P-12 College on receiving the Outstanding School Achievement Award in the 2024 Snow Australia Community Sport Awards, wishing them all the best in the future.
