1,060 young snowsport athletes have spent a week of their school holidays at the 2019 Travelplan Ski Sydney Interschools Snowsport Championships.
72 schools are represented at the Thredbo event, with more than 2,300 event entries expected over the five days of competition.
It is 15-year-old Claudia Cowan’s (pictured right) favourite event of the year.
“It’s competitive and fun but I also get to see my friends from Jindabyne and other schools, people from all over Sydney that I don’t get to see throughout the year,” Cowan said.
The Wenona high school student followed her family into skiing and hasn’t looked back.
“My two brothers have been skiing as long as I have. I started Interschools in kindy and have been skiing since I was three.”
Cowan said she has made friends all over the world through skiing.
“I went to the Whistler Cup two years ago and I really liked that. It was great race against and meet new people from other parts of the world.
“I made a few friends from America who have come over and trained with me.”
Cowan competes in Ski Cross and Alpine and is taking her skiing career to the next level this year.
“I’m hoping to do a few FIS races this year.
“I train full-time, as much as I can, and most of the time I do Alpine. I feel like I am better at that,” she said.
She plans to ski competitively as long as she can.
“I want to stay in the sport and do the races and have fun.”
With a silver medal from the Division 1 Ski Cross team’s event already around her neck, Cowan is hoping for more good results across the weekend.
