Cross Country Director Update - February 2025
Published Tue 25 Feb 2025
Wow. Just wow.
I'm sure many in the skiing community thought that Australia would never win a cross country skiing medal in a championship event. Rosie Fordham's silver medal at the World U23s in Italy is a fantastic achievement, congratulations to Rosie and all the team whose efforts helped to make this performance possible. The jubilation of all the team on-site in Schilpario (and in my living room) was self-evident.
Though the podium performance exceeded expectations going into the event, it was not such a surprise as might be imagined. Both Rosie and Hugo Hinckfuss came into these U23s aspiring for a top 10 performance. Great form and snow conditions aligned for this to be Rosie's day, and she laid it all out there for the medal to become a reality. On another day, in different conditions, this could have been Hugo's chance to break the ceiling. With numerous top 30s at World Juniors and U23s in recent years, this is an exciting time for Australian cross country skiing and I look forward to seeing what comes next.
What is immediately next is the World Championship in Trondheim. The Australian Team is on site in full preparation for a week and a half of racing in front of huge crowds in the most fanatical cross country skiing nation in the world. Read on below to meet the full team in Trondheim, and tune in to Snow Live for all the action.
Last for this update is a heads-up for the World Masters taking place in Klosters, Switzerland, in mid-February. Australia is represented this year by the largest ever Australian Team. All the best wishes to everyone taking part.
Happy skiing (and ski spectating) to all.
