Cross County Skiers in Perisher for Australian Championships

All eyes are on Perisher this weekend for the 2019 Australian Cross Country Championships with the main event, the FIS ANC Cup, attracting Australia’s leading skiers.

This important event on the ski calendar is also a selection event for the Australian Junior Team and the 2020 Lausanne Youth Olympic Winter Games.

After he won the classic sprint and 15 kilometre freestyle at the opening Championship event at Falls Creek, two-time Olympian Phillip Bellingham leads the way with 200 points in the men’s Continental Cup standings.

His nearest rival is Seve de Campo, who with two silver medals at the Falls Creek event, has amassed 160 points leading into the weekend.

It is much closer in the women’s rankings as Olympian Casey Wright and Katerina Paul are even on 180 points after each won a gold and silver medal at Falls Creek.

One to watch de Campo said he was looking forward to a “tough classic style distance event, especially in Perisher” this weekend.

“Sunday looks to be windy and warm so it will be a real grind,” de Campo said.

Olympian Phil Bellingham and Swiss athlete, Lauro Braendli are on the list of Seve’s biggest competition.

“Of course, Phil will probably be strong, especially in his favourite skate sprint event,” he said.

The event format has switched this weekend to include sprints in freestyle technique and the distance races (5km for women and 10km for men) in classic style.
