Special February Family-Friendly Work Party, Perisher XC Trails

Published Fri 24 Jan 2025

At Snow Australia, we know that our favourite winter sports don't just happen once the snow hits the slopes – they take year-round dedication and hard work from our incredible volunteers.

Even when there's no snow on the ground, the preparation and maintenance continue, ensuring that everything is ready for the next season.

A team of incredible volunteers have been working hard to prepare the trails and the Perisher facility ahead of the Australian season.

This February, you can be a part of that ongoing effort.

Whether you're passionate about cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, or simply love the mountains, we’re inviting you to help us prepare the trails for another epic winter.

Perisher XC is looking for volunteers to lend a hand on the trails, and we’re excited to announce a special family-friendly event that’s perfect for all ages!

Summer Work Parties on the Perisher XC Trails provide the invisible base for the winter sport of XC skiing.

If you haven't seen what is under the snow you ski on, this is your chance to be surprised!

Volunteering at Snow Australia and Perisher XC is a chance to give back to the community and ensure that our cross-country trails remain in top shape, not just when snow is on the ground but year-round.

Your efforts help create a better experience for skiers, snowboarders, and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

What's Happening:

On February 1-2, join us for a special volunteer work party at Perisher XC trails. This event isn’t just for the seasoned volunteers; it's designed for families, too.

Mel Sim, a long-time member of the XC community, will be organizing fun, age-appropriate activities for kids aged 4 years old and up.

Mel is an environmental educator and community engagement facilitator who works across schools in the Canberra area.

She’s also got all the right qualifications, including a NSW Working with Children Check and First Aid certification.

Accommodation & Social Time:

Overnight accommodation is available in Perisher, generously provided by the Canberra Alpine Club. This includes spaces for families. If you're planning to stay overnight, don’t forget to bring your bed linen, towels, and food for meals – the shared Saturday evening dinner is always a highlight, full of good conversation and camaraderie.

How to Get Involved:

  • If you're interested in volunteering, please reach out to Peter Ward at nswxc1@gmail.com. Let him know if you’ll be attending part or all of the February 1-2 weekend work party.
  • For accommodation, please contact Peter Cunningham at peter.petercunningham@gmail.com to arrange your stay.

Bring Your Gear:

Make sure to bring your gum boots, work gloves, PPE, work clothes for any weather, and some snacks for the day. A hot water urn, sandwich press, microwave, coffee, and tea will be available at the shelter to keep you fueled for the day’s work.

Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities:

This event marks just one of many volunteer opportunities throughout the year. Volunteers are essential for maintaining our trails and facilities year-round, and there are several more work parties scheduled over the coming months:

  • Feb 1-2, 2025 (plus extra weekdays for those available)
  • March 1-2, 2025 (plus extra weekdays)
  • April 5-6, 2025 (plus extra weekdays)
  • May 17-18, 2025 (plus extra weekdays)
  • June, if required

These work parties are key to keeping our trails pristine and ready for winter. If you’re interested in continuing to volunteer after the February event, please let us know, and we can arrange accommodation for extended stays.

For more information or to volunteer, contact Peter Ward at nswxc1@gmail.com.
