FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships underway in Davos

Australia’s top junior alpine skiers are in Davos for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships that will take place from 30 January – 8 February 2018.
The Aussies will be well represented by Alec Scott, Louis Muhlen-Schulte, Jack Adams and Lily Tomkinson.

Thursday 1 February
Sunshine greeted competitors on day two of the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships in Davos.
Meta Hrovat (SLO) and local hero Marco Odermatt raced to gold in slalom and downhill respectively.
Among a tough field, Aussie Louis Muhlen-Schulte, finished a solid 28th. He had a really strong first run and despite not delivering a great second run, delivered a top 30 performance at the World Championships.

He had a really strong first run and despite not delivering a great second run, delivered a top 30 performance at the World Championships. The downhill was staged as a two-run format as it is 450m vertical. The competition had been moved forward with weather and heavy snow anticipated for 1st February.

Wednesday 31 January - Opening Ceremony – Day 1
The evening saw the official opening of the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships at the Bolgen Plaza in Davos. Following the nations’ parade, the teams and spectators were entertained by traditional Swiss music, including a performance by local alphorn players.
FIS Council Member Eduardo Roldan then declared the Championships open. In his speech, he said: “I wish all athletes very successful Junior World Ski Championships, good weather, sports performances at the highest level and great excitement and fun at this very important event.”
After the official opening, local ski clubs and the local snow sports school performed an impressive show on the ski slope and in the halfpipe under the floodlights.
For the Aussies on the first day, Louis Muhlen-Schulte finished 48th in the Training - Men's Downhill, with Lily Tomkinson unfortunately recording a DNF in the Giant Slalom.

There is plenty more competition coming up for all Aussies. Action continues with ladies’ slalom and men’s downhill races on Wednesday, 31st January. Due to the weather forecast, the men’s downhill was moved from Thursday, 1st February, to one day earlier. For the first time, it will be a 2-run format as it is 450m vertical.
