FIS Point Update for All Disciplines
Published Fri 25 Sep 2020
Action required before 30 September
With the uncertainty surrounding the 2020 domestic season, Snow Australia decided that all previous active FIS registrations from the 2019/20 season would be extended through to the 30th of September 2020. As we are now approaching the 30th of September deadline, Snow Australia is required to update the FIS status for all Australian athletes for the 2020/21 FIS year.
With the northern winter providing further challenges with travel restrictions, our FIS level competitors who are yet to renew their membership need to make a decision with regard to their FIS status and any point penalties that may be applied should they not compete or become inactive.
How could my FIS points be affected?
Participants that do not retain an active FIS registration or do not compete for a 12 month period will receive a FIS point penalty.
At this time, FIS has not confirmed whether there will be any consideration to provide a process for protecting points that would be adversely affected by penalties due to no competitions or an inactive status, however they have confirmed they will monitor the situation during the northern winter and make a determination in May. Snow Australia will also work with FIS and the community to determine an appropriate credit or refund that may accompany this outcome.
Snow Australia will update the community once we have more information.
If you are currently a Snow Australia member, FIS registered and able to compete during the northern winter then you will not be affected by these penalties.
What Are My Options?
Option 1: Retaining an active FIS Registration for 2020/2021 Northern Season
If you will not be able to compete this season and would like to minimise the effect of penalties on your FIS points, then you should consider renewing your Snow Australia membership and FIS registration.
By being a current Snow Australia member and retaining an active FIS registration, you will be more likely to benefit from any considerations from FIS should a process be implemented to protect points for those that cannot travel or compete due to government restrictions. You will also be eligible for any refund or credit that may be determined.
Option 2: Not Renewing FIS Registration for 2020/2021 Northern Season
You also have the option to not renew your Snow Australia membership and FIS registration for 2020-21 and receive point penalties as per the FIS rules. You will be less likely to benefit from any point protection processes FIS implements.
