Five skiers selected for Alpine Junior World Championships

The 2024 FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships start later week at Portes du Soleil in the France’s Haute-Savoie department, with Snow Australia is pleased to announce five athletes will be in the starting gates.

Joey Steggall returns for his second straight Junior Worlds, and is joined by Abbey Evans, Pia Bruce, James Kelly and Kyle McGown.

The five-strong team will compete in the technical events - slalom and giant slalom - with a possible start in the team event.

Steggall raced in Argentina during the northern summer and has been preparing by competing in France. The 20-year-old has being living and training in Morzine, giving the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games representative good local knowledge of the race hills.

Evans, 18, has started the season competing in Sweden and Australia, while Bruce, 19, has been racing heavily in Italy and North America following a strong domestic winter in Australia and New Zealand.

Kelly, 19, had an active home season competing in New Zealand and has followed that up in Austria and Italy for the last two months.

McGown, 20, has competed in eight Nor-Am Cup races this northern season following his ANC campaign.

“These National Alpine Ski Team athletes have a very special experience in front of them in France and one which they will remember for their entire career,” Fleming said.

“Opportunities to represent your country at big international events such as Junior World Championships don’t come around all the time and selection is a result of dedication and performance.

“There’s no doubt this competition will serve all five athletes well as they move closer to competing on the international stage at the senior level.
