The inaugural Snowboard Alpine FUTURES was held on Saturday 29 July at Mt Buller with participants given the opportunity to train on a giant slalom course with national team athletes, coaches and Olympians.
Going into the event the program aims were to give athletes exposure to the discipline of Snowboard Alpine and prepare riders for competition.
Millie Bongiorno, a veteran of the last three World Championships, said the Snowboard Alpine FUTURES was a tremendous success with all involved learning from some of the sport’s best minds.
“It was an incredibly rewarding experience for me to assist in hosting this event,” said Bongiorno. “We had a total of 23 athletes participating who showed a lot of passion and dedication towards improving their racing skills, which made for an extremely rewarding weekend.
“We identified many strong riders who show a great deal of promise towards Alpine Snowboarding within Australia and we are excited to continue working to build an athlete pathway in this discipline.
“The future of Alpine Snowboarding in Australia is certainly looking bright and we cannot wait to host the next Alpine Snowboard Futures Camp!”
World Cup rider Harvey Edmanson echoed Bongiorno’s sentiments, saying the camp showed the Snowboard Alpine was looking better than ever.
“This hopes to be the beginning of a very strong pathway for Alpine Snowboarding in Australia,” said Edmanson. “The athletes had a great opportunity to train on a racecourse with coaching from the national team athletes as well as national team coach Leigh Delahoy, two-time Olympian Johanna Lyle and Mt Buller Race Club coaches Adam and Matej.
“A massive thank you to Snow Australia, Mt Buller Race Club, Mt Buller and all the athletes for a great camp.”
