As most 13-year-old Australians prepared to start high school, up and coming park and pipe athlete Valentino Guseli was also doing something new – competing in the men’s halfpipe final of the FIS Junior World Championships.

Held in Leysin, Switzerland, the men’s and women’s halfpipe events were held on 26 January.

Guseli was the youngest competitor to make the final and finished a credible 10th overall, making it an Australia Day to remember for the Narooma youngster.

The Aussie teen was consistent in qualifying, putting down two strong runs that scored 80.7 and 82.7 respectively.

In the final, his opening run scored 77.0 and his second was awarded 57.0.

The top three placings were filled by Japan and Canada with Japanese rider Ruka Hirano winning with a best run of 96.3.

Guseli will next compete at the Burton US Open Junior Jam.
