The Sport Australia Hall of Fame (SAHOF) today announced the remaining 16 scholarships for up-and-coming elite athletes in its 2023 Scholarship and Mentoring Program

Cross Country Skier Hugo Hinckfuss has been named as one of the 16 recipients of the Tier 3 Scholarship, with each athlete receiving a grant of $2,500 plus support from SAHOF and its esteemed member base over the next 15 months.

It comes off the back of an incredible international season for the 19-year-old who made his Olympic debut at Beijing 2022, represented Australia at the Junior World Championships and made his World Cup debut.

Hinckfuss said he was honoured to have all his hard work and results celebrated through receiving the SAHOF scholarship.

“To be a successful SAHOF Scholarship recipient is a great honour for me,” he said

“The support provided by SAHOF fills me with more confidence in my development towards my future goals, especially as there are so many great athletes that have come before me who have taken this development pathway too.”

Over the last three weeks, 32 Sport Australia Hall of Fame scholarships covering 28 sports have been announced, supporting the next generation of Australia’s sporting stars on their journey to excellence and success in sport and in life.

Snow Australia Performance & Pathway Manager Ben Wordsworth said the recognition in the SAHOF Scholarship program is a fitting tribute for Hinckfuss’ recent success.

“We are thrilled that Hugo will be among the 32 athletes receiving a Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship in 2023,” Wordsworth said

“Hugo started his journey as a cross-country skier nine years ago and since has competed at the Youth Winter Olympic Games, World Junior Championships and most recently, making his Olympic Games debut at 18 years old, as the youngest ever Australian to represent the nation at an Olympic
Games in Cross Country Skiing.”

Chef de Mission for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Team and OWIA CEO, Geoff Lipshut added his congratulations.

“Hugo Hinckfuss was one of the youngest members of the Australian Olympic Team in Beijing 2022, earlier this year,” Lipshut said

“Hugo is an outstanding junior skier and gave a great account of himself taking on the very best in his sport in China at his first Games.

“Hugo is very deserving of the recognition and support from SAHOF and we all look forward to his future development as a leading Australian senior athlete on the world stage.”

As the nation’s leading sports scholarship program, backed by the Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Institute of Sport, $150,000 of funding has been awarded this year to the recipients for use on resources to help them achieve greatness in their chosen sport.
