Snow Australia celebrates Interschools volunteers as part of National Volunteer Week

Published Fri 22 May 2020

Snowsport Interschool Championships are a featured event on the Australian snowsport calendar every season, with thousands of students taking part each year.

An important grassroots event that provides young people with quality competition would not be possible without the support and hard work of so many volunteers.

Andrew Herring is one of the many Interschools volunteers that work tirelessly to ensure that children have the opportunity to participate in such events.

It was in fact the time he spent with his own children at Interschools events that inspired him to start volunteering.

“If you don’t put your hand up to help, then events like Interschools wouldn’t happen,” Andrew said.

“I spent a lot of time at these events with my own children and saw how many people were working hard behind the scenes and I knew I wanted to get involved.

“The sport has been great for my kids and volunteering is my way of giving back to the sport,” he said.

Like many others, it’s the pure enjoyment of the children participating that keeps Andrew coming back year after year.

“When you see the kids on the starting line with a big smile on their face, and then see them get to the bottom of a run safely with a big smile on their face - that’s what it’s all about.

“The camaraderie amongst the Interschools volunteers is great.

“We don’t get to catch up during summer, so when we see each other in the winter it’s always great to be back together again.

“I’ve met so many great people, I even met my best friend through volunteering!” he said.

Snow Australia would like to thank Andrew, and all of the Interschools volunteers that make our events possible.
