National Alpine events update

Published Fri 06 Aug 2021

As Snow Australia continues to closely monitor the directives from State and Federal Governments and their Health Departments, some minor changes to the 2021 Alpine events calendar will be implemented in the next few weeks.

A joint decision was made by Snow Australia and the ski clubs - through the National Alpine Committee Capability Working Group - to prioritise competition opportunities for athletes and ensure that some form of events were available during the season.

The Snow Australia Alpine Children’s Carnival originally scheduled on September 3-5 at Mt Buller will be run as two separate events in NSW and Victoria, to prevent issues with interstate travel associated with border closures and quarantine requirements.

The NSW Children Carnival and FIS events will be held in Thredbo, while the Victorian Children's Carnival will remain at Mt Buller, with the Victorian resorts currently looking at adding additional FIS races to the calendar, if at all possible.

Race formats for these events may differ from state to state, and will be based on resources and opportunities, with all organisers focused on creating a fun and safe environment for the athletes alongside maximising participation and competition.

Snow Australia is working with the clubs to finalise the dates, with an event schedule to be made available possibly as soon as next week.

We thank the snow community for its patience and understanding during this difficult time and thank the Clubs and Resorts for their continued support.

Snow Australia continues to monitor government public health directives. Where possible, and subject to COVID safe plans, Snow Australia supports the hosting of events for those athletes that are able to attend. Snow Australia recognises that the restriction on movements may preclude some athletes from participating in certain events and potentially distorting the intended participant classification. This is balanced against the benefit to those athletes that can attend and the desire to provide competition opportunities following the cancellation of all events last season. Snow Australia will ensure that athletes who are unable to compete this domestic season due to restrictions will not be adversely affected in terms of team selection and program opportunities going forward.  Awards may be varied at the discretion of the Board of Snow Australia.
