National Champions Crowned in Long Awaited Return of FIS Alpine Racing

Published Fri 16 Sep 2022

The return of FIS Alpine events has seen National Champions and National Junior Champions crowned in Giant Slalom and Slalom at Perisher this week.

Six races over three days were scheduled, with two extra FIS events scheduled after Nationals, however weather forced the cancellation of the sixth event on Friday afternoon.

In true spring style, the events were held in all types of conditions including sun, rain, wind and snow, however the challenging conditions couldn’t dampen the spirits of our Australian athletes.

After winning silver in the GS at the start of the week, Sophie Mahon was stoked to win her first Australian tile in Slalom.

“It was such an honour to win this title,” she said

“I have always looked up to and admired the people who have won it before me.”

National GS Champion, and Junior GS Champion Guisane Stafford said it was a great event to be part of.

"I am very grateful for the effort the Perisher team put in to make it happen despite the challenging conditions," she said.

"These few days were great, competitors and staff were supportive and welcoming which created a good atmosphere.

"I'm happy about my results despite not being able to train this season."

National team member Joey Steggall, who won the Junior GS Australian title and won bronze in the Open Slalom event,  commented “it was good seeing everyone again racing in Australia after two years apart.”

The events were also the first Alpine events in over two years to have international athletes competing down under, with participants from Austria and Slovakia joining our Australian contingent.

National Alpine director Shawn Fleming was pleased with the turnout at the events.

“It was great to have our clubs come together for multiple races,” he said.

“It was fantastic to have some of our National team members competing and was a great experience for those who are new to FIS racing.

“A big congratulations to not only event winners, but to all competitors. It is important to note that for some of the field, this was their first international or FIS level competition.

“All athletes rose to the challenge daily and displayed resilience and perseverance.”
