National GS Alpine Championships at Thredbo

Thredbo Resort and Thredbo Ski Racing Club hosted the National GS this past week, with Australian skiers posting some strong results including a comeback by ski veteran Jenny Owens.
Lily Tomkinson won the first GS race with a solid second run edging her past Jenny Owens, who had not raced alpine for many years competitively but did post the fastest 1st run time. Owens who has competed at three Winter Olympic games, the past two in skier x, was happy with her first outing but looking for improvement.
Tomkinson who had two podiums the week before in Perisher, kept her podium record in tact but has now progressed to the top step. Madison Hoffman who had a 1st and 2nd the week before settled for third place with Zali Offord in 4th.
Race 1 GS Women
1 Lily Tomkinson 49.54 – 53.89 1:43.43
2 Jenny Owens 48.98 – 54.69 1:43.67 (+0.24)
3 Madison Hoffman 49.65 – 55.00 1:44.65 (+1.22)
Thomas Woolson from the USA won the men’s GS but not before 1st run leader Harry Laidlaw had a shocking 2nd run giving back over 3 seconds to the eventual winner. Laidlaw had set a cracking pace in the 1st run but like many skiers in the 2nd run, had trouble with the course, but at least managed to finish. Many of the top contenders had trouble negotiating the lower top section of the course and failed to finish.
Harrison Coull finished 2nd and Oliver Thompson placed 3rd to round put the podium in the 1st race of the week.

Tuesday’s second GS race also hosted the National Junior GS Alpine. The race again held on Thredbo’s World Cup run gave spectators a great view form the chair above as competitors raced against each other and the clock.
Lily Tomkinson maintained her pace from Monday’s first race and again graced the top step of the podium with a fine victory after a cracking 2nd run time, the only woman in the 49’s for the day and a comfortable winning margin. Madison Hoffman moved up one place for a silver placing and Jenny Owens, who was racing under her maiden name, not her married name of Lyons finished third.
Race 2 GS Women
1 Lily Tomkinson 51.29 – 49.84 1:41.13
2 Madison Hoffman 51.91 – 51.15 1:43.06 (+1.93)

Harry Laidlaw made up for his errors on Monday with a narrow victory over Michelangelo Tentori from Italy, with Peter Fucigna from the USA in third. Only 0.35 separated the three skiers with Laidlaw storming home with the fastest time of the day in the 2nd run.
