New AUSXC Junior Cup Races

The Snow Australia Cross Country Committee (SAXC) would like to announce that the Australian Junior Championship scheduled for August 21/22 is set to take a new name and format. As the majority of junior skiers will be unable to travel to Perisher on this date, SAXC will instead conduct junior races at both Perisher and Falls Creek on this weekend. These events are to be called the AUSXC Junior Cup, with the aim to provide the opportunity for at least some of the best junior skiers in the country to be able to race a high quality championship event. Of course, all events will need to comply with any Covid-19 restrictions in place at the time.

In NSW the plan is for the AUSXC Junior Cup at Perisher to follow the original AUS Juniors format, with a Freestyle Sprint on Saturday August 21 and Classic Distance races on Sunday August 22. In Victoria, the AUSXC Junior Cup at Falls Creek is to see Freestyle Sprint Time Trial and Classic Distance races both held on the Saturday. On Sunday August 22 there is already the Rocky Valley Rush at Falls Creek, which juniors (and any seniors) can choose to race as well. These Falls Creek junior events are effectively both a replacement for the cancelled Victorian Junior Championships and the lost opportunity to compete in the AUS Juniors.

SAXC would also like to inform that the FIS / AUS Open Championship event postponed from July 31 / August 1 has been rescheduled for September 4/5 at Falls Creek, with the same Classic Sprint and Freestyle 5/10km events originally on the FIS calendar.

New online registration for all of these events will be posted on AUSXC when available. Any athletes already entered in the AUS Junior Championships will be eligible for a refund. SAXC would also like to thank the NSWACT XC Committee, Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club and Wangaratta Ski Club for their assistance in rebranding and rescheduling these events, and for providing ongoing opportunities for championship level racing.
