With over 3,000 event entries counted, the Perisher slopes were a hive of activity for the first Interschools event of 2019.
Kicking off on Tuesday 9 July, the event attracted 1,200 participants from 230 schools involving athletes of all ages and abilities, from beginner to advanced.
Their competition goals might have varied, but all participants were there to have fun.
St Ives High School student Zac Graham is a lifelong Interschools competitor. The year 12 student has been to every event since he was in kindergarten.
‘Having a go’ is enough motivation for the St Ives High School student, who first started skiing for Wahroonga Public School.
“I don’t go out there to be the best or most accomplished,” Graham said.
“I’ve always enjoyed competing but having fun and meeting new people is what I enjoy,” he said.
Graham started on skiis but transitioned to snowboard for the variety. He competes in both the Snowboard Cross and Giant Slalom events.
He said his fondest memories were those that involved the snowsport community.
“I’ve got to know the community through the schools and teams I’ve competed with and I’ve known them a long time. It’s good to compete against people who support you.”
“It’s always great meeting up with team mates from previous years who offer you encouragement,” he said.
One of Graham’s funniest memories is from his first Interschools experience.
“I was in kindergarten and the weather wasn’t great. The organisers laid blue lines on the snow to guide us through the fog, but the line went over the finish box rather than the finish line so I skied right over the box.”
With his school life coming to an end, Graham plans to pay it forward in the future.
“I want to to take my mates out and help them, and if I have kids I’d like them to experience what I did.”
