Wrap Up of the NSW ACTQLD Alpine Awards Night
More than 120 athletes and their super support teams (families) attended the NSW/ACT/QLD Alpine End of Season and Awards Presentation on Saturday night, October 19 at Cammeray Golf Club in Sydney.
The annual event was organised by the NSW/ACT/QLD Alpine Committee to celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of alpine and ski cross racers over the southern season and, for the adults, it was an opportunity to catch up without a clipboard in hand or wearing an official’s bib.
Awards were handed out to U12s, U14s, U16s and FIS (Junior/Open) athletes across the two disciplines. Development trophies were awarded to athletes in each age year acknowledging encouraging performance improvements over the last 12 months. The perpetual trophy for Alpine Ski Club of the Year was awarded to Southern Alps Ski Club which supports many aspiring racers.
Highlights of the evening included an informative and entertaining alpine and ski cross update from Steve Cooper OAM, who is a SSA Board Member and is Chair of both Interschool Snowsports Australia and the SSA National Participation Committee plus, the “world premiere” of the latest action movie from our very own NSWACTQLD Alpine committee member and photographer Kemble Cowan!
Steve covered many subjects relevant to the alpine community with the focus on the importance of maintaining, engaging and building a sense of community across alpine and ski cross. He discussed many important new initiatives that are underway such as the Jindabyne National Snowsports Training Centre and the FTEM (Foundation/Talent/Elite/Mastery) pathway. In addition, Steve spoke about the renaming and rebranding of Ski & Snowboard Australia; plans to refresh all of the National Discipline Committees and the delivery of the inaugural National Participation Conference and Community Sport Awards Evening to be held in Canberra on November 7 and 8.
Steve discussed global, Australian and localised developments that are impacting on resort volume challenges in the approaching decade (hill space versus car-spot dynamic), the Participation to Performance Pathway objectives as well as building longevity, commitment and resilience in a changing snowsports environment.
He finished with some personal comments educating the audience on the role of “HUV’s" (Highly Unpaid Volunteers and the "POFO’s "(Parents of Future Olympians) highlighting the importance of dreams, direction, reflections and capacity to re-group and keep moving forward to a better place.
The audience loved it and the NSW/ACT/QLD Alpine Committee is extremely grateful for the support shown to the Alpine community by Steve and his hard-working team.
A big thank you to our sponsors who provided prizes on the evening: Thredbo & Perisher Resorts, Racers Edge Jindabyne, Off Piste Ski and Snowboard, Toasty Toes and The Man from Snowy River Hotel, Perisher. Special thanks also to John Adams who was the official photographer of the evening.
