NSWIS Winter Sports Squad announced for 2017-18 season
Published Fri 02 Jun 2017
The NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) has announced 41 Australian ski and snowboard athletes in their Winter Sports Squad for the 2017-18 season this week.
The Winter Sports Squad Program aims to support Australian winter sport athletes to become world’s best through world-class coaching, training, facilities and support services to achieve excellence and success at international level.
SSA and the OWIA have a long established program partnership with NSWIS, who are the primary Institute partner for the majority of the Winter Sport Winning Edge Tier 1 foundation sports. Together with SSA and OWIA, NSWIS delivers athlete servicing, coordination and program opportunities for winter sport athletes in Mogul Skiing, Snowboard Cross, Ski Cross, Park and Pipe and individual opportunities to athletes in Alpine Skiing and Cross Country Skiing.
There is no better example of the success of the NSWIS underpinning program than Australia’s first female mogul skiing World Champion Britt Cox, who at the age of 15 began her NSWIS journey. She is now World Champion having transitioned from the NSWIS program in 2011 to begin working full time with OWIA head coach Steve Desovich. Current world number 4 and fellow Mogul skier Matt Graham enjoyed a similar journey and several of the next generation stars, including Jakara Anthony, Tess Coady (Slopestyle) and Adam Lambert (SBX) are on the same path.
Squad selections are based on athletes’ performance at nominated events in the previous season, their fitness and athletic ability, technical competence, potential to improve and their competitive ability.
