Overall FIS JNR SBX Series Champions Crowned

The highly anticipated final stop of the of the FIS JNR SBX Series, powered by the Chumpy Pullin Foundation, took place in challenging conditions at Perisher this week.

The snow and wind were unable to stifle the competitive fire brought by all athletes, with the Chumpy Pullin Trophy on the line in both divisions for the overall Series Winner.

A pair of new event winners emerged from the heat battles, with Tara Jones and Will McCarthy taking out the Perisher stop.

Max Vardy’s win in the Small Final was enough to secure him the Overall Men’s Championship with a total of 259 Series Points.

In a similar fashion, Lara Walsh’s 5th place finishing was enough to secure the Overall Women’s Championship with a nail-biting finish of 285 Series Points over Abbey Wilson’s 280 points.

Walsh said she didn't know what to expect when she came into the new series, but has loved the opportunity to test herself against Australia's best up and coming riders.

"Coming into the series as one of the younger athletes, I definitely didn’t expect this result, but I couldn’t be happier to come away with the overall win," Walsh said.

"It was a great experience to ride with Australia’s best junior SBX athletes. The competition was very strong and challenging which helped me progress as a rider.

"This is the first time that we have all been able to race together in two years and the first time we have had a full SBX series in Australia. It was an amazing experience and I am super proud to have been part of the inaugural series."

Walsh said the introduction of this event has been a game-changer for the sport in Australia.

"The introduction of the JNR FIS SBX series has been fantastic for our sport. Australia has a lot of talented SBX riders, and the series has given all of the upcoming riders an opportunity to ride together, learn from each other and challenge ourselves.

"It would be great to see a junior race introduced at each event so that younger riders can have a solid pathway into FIS.

"I want to thank the Chumpy Pullin Foundation and Snow Australia for making this series happen and for promoting our sport. I am really looking forward to riding in the series in the coming years and watching the events grow and encouraging more riders to take on this amazing opportunity."

All athletes should be congratulated on producing some high-quality heat racing over the course of the four-stop series.  The competition experience and FIS points gained through the series will assist these developing SBX athletes in the upcoming international season of North America and Europa Cups.

Snow Australia would like to sincerely thank all of the athletes, parents, resorts, the National Snowboard Committee, The Chumpy Foundation and its partners for making the vision for a FIS JNR SBX Series in Australia a reality.

The Series will be returning bigger and better than ever in 2023.
