Published Thu 26 Oct 2023
Snow Australia has updated the Recognised Pathway Provider program for 2024 which is used identify those clubs and programs that provide important pathway development, training, support and opportunities to the snowsports community. We will take the opportunity over the next few months to acknowledge Recognised Pathway Providers in Park & Pipe with Turn & Burn the first club to be profiled.
Turn & Burn have one overarching goal: Make young Australian skiers and snowboarders better.
Operating alongside the Thredbo Mountain Academy in the Southern Winter and in Switzerland for the Northern winter, Turn & Burn provide a development focused year-round program for Freeskiers and Snowboarders. This unique program is proud to be so focused on increasing the level of Australian snowsports athletes.
Founded by Australian snowboarder Ryan Tiene, Turn & Burn initially catered for athletes competing in Snowboard Park and Pipe. Snowboarding legend Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin saw the great work being done for these athletes and saw the opportunity to inject himself into the Turn & Burn family, providing opportunities for budding Snowboard Cross athletes to reach their potential. Chumpy’s legacy lives on through the Turn & Burn SBX program. In 2023, Leon Tarbotton collaborated with Ryan, meaning that Turn & Burn now provide training and competition opportunities to Freeski athletes too.
Turn & Burn are an innovative program, creating opportunities for athletes to develop both in the air, on snow and in their off-snow lives too. The Readiness Camps have been a huge success, brining athletes together to collaborate, build resilience and encourage a growth mindset. The program utilises the airbag and acrobatic centres at the National Snowsports Training Centre, allowing a focused progression of skills from the safety of the airbag and trampoline, to the snow in the same or next day.
Turn & Burn have a blend of Australian and International coaches who come from many different cultures. They live and breathe snow and are motivated by the progression of their disciplines. They aspire to create meaningful connection with their athletes and provide layers of insight to the performance journey, with some ex-athletes and Olympic coaches in their group. Coaches are active members of the Snow Australia coach academy, regularly coming together to collaborate and raise the level of the sport.
