Snow Australia publishes Interschool Snowsports Honour Roll for 2020

360 year 12 students across Australia, who missed the opportunity to compete in the 2020 Interschools Championships, have been acknowledged today by Snow Australia with the publication of the 2020 Year-12 Interschools Snowsports Honour Roll.

The roll lists all students who will be finishing their schooling later in the year and would have participated in their last Interschools Championships in 2020, had the events not been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Many of these students have competed at Interschools since Kindergarten, or have not missed an event in the last 10-12 years,” said Snow Australia National Participation and Sport Development Manager, Steve Nelson.

“The cancellation of the 2020 Interschools Championships was very disappointing for everyone involved in the ski industry, even more so for these students who were hoping to compete on the snow with their friends for one last time before finishing their final year at school. This Honour Roll is a way to acknowledge their long-term participation in the event and Snow Australia wish them all the best for 2021 and beyond.”

Youth Olympian and Snowboard Cross athlete Finn Sadler was amongst the students who missed out on Interschools this year. Originally an Alpine skier, Sadler has competed in all events at Interschools since year 1 and in 2016 was the National Champion in Alpine, Snowboarding, Cross-country and Ski Cross, before deciding to specialise in Snowboard Cross from 2018 onwards.

“I enjoyed the friendly rivalry between the schools and making great friends over the years. It was fun competing against mates and seeing everyone challenge themselves. I’ll miss all the friends, ski families and coaches that have encouraged me and supported me since Year 1,” Sadler said.

Like many of his fellow students, Sadler was introduced to competitive ski and snowboard through the Interschools Snowsports Championships before going from competing for his school to representing Australia internationally.

“Competing at Interschools gives you the skills to push yourself competitively in preparation for international racing,” added Sadler. “It was an amazing experience to represent Australia [at the 2020 Youth Olympic Games] and meet athletes from all over the world.”

As part of the national initiative, individual Interschools participation certificates have also been produced and are being distributed to the eligible year-12 students through their schools.
