Snow Australia Welcomes Confirmation of 2020 Snow Season

Published Mon 25 May 2020

Snow Australia is delighted with announcements in NSW and Victoria over the past few days confirming the 2020 Snow season will commence, albeit in a delayed fashion.

The Snow Industry has worked tirelessly over the past months to develop COVID safe operational plans which have led to these welcomed announcements.  In summary, the Resorts will operate within the broader framework of evolving, easing of restrictions.  In the coming weeks, refinements will be announced to address the specific features of the industry, particularly in the areas of shared accommodation, public transport and advanced ticket sales.

The positive announcement is an important first step and is in line with the expectations of the industry.  However, more time and planning will be required before we are in a position to outline with adequate certainty, the impact and opportunities for our sport programs and events in what is likely to be a modified operational environment.  Focus is not just on “field of play”, but also crowd gatherings during and after events.  We are confident solutions can be found.

The key message from Snow Australia to our community is to remain patient and flexible over the coming weeks and throughout the winter months.  We continue to work with Resorts, clubs and the broader industry and will provide updates as developments emerge and plans become clearer.  In the meanwhile, Snow Australia is developing Club & Program guidelines in line with the AIS Return-to-Sport protocols and the sport’s own Medical Commission.  These will be published on or before 1st June and updated as necessary.

We are excited that the 2020 season is on track for a late June start and encourage everyone to download the COVID-Safe App.  It plays an important role in helping us all get back to doing what we love in the mountains.

Stay safe.
