Snowboard Community Update - July 2023

Published Fri 28 Jul 2023

Hi all, welcome to this month’s edition of the Snowboard Community Update. My name is James Johnstone, and I’m excited to be bringing you the update this month.

My season is going great so far! We as a team have been doing a lot of work in the gym and on the bike to ensure we are fit for the domestic racing season. We've also been doing a lot of work in our fundamental skills up on this hill which has been great.

Unfortunately the first race of the 2023 FIS SBX Junior Series has been cancelled due to lack of snow, however I am very much looking forward to the next race in the series at Mt Buller. It will be a great junior field with lots of riders and a chance for us all to push ourselves, get better and compete in the sport that we enjoy so much.

The NSWIS SBX team environment is incredible. We maintain high standards within our team and have an amazing time while doing so. We train hard, we give it our all and we all support each other very well. Maintaining a high standard of training on and off snow means that my teammates and I are constantly pushing ourselves to get better each and every day. Training and living alongside the other NSWIS disciplines in winter sport has also been great. Meeting new people and training with them has also been great.

The team and I have been using the National Snowsports Training Center nearly everyday for the last month. The facility is amazing. The new gym is equipped with everything we need and allows us to train to the maximum. The gym, cardio room, athlete lounge and meeting rooms along with the other facilities have been great to use and have allowed me to maximise my training. Along with the athlete village where I am staying, which is only 50 meters from the NSTC, it makes for a great setup for high performance athletes.

SBX in Australia is going great at the moment and the future is looking bright! With great success in the last European season, the OWIA team and NSWIS team have a great opportunity this winter to train hard and get an extra edge over the other nations that we compete against. Looking further ahead, there is some great young talent coming through the club programs and thanks to the Chumpy FIS JNR SBX Series, the younger athletes are getting more experience racing at a younger age which will make their progression in the sport even better.

I'd like to say thanks to Snow Australia for getting the NSTC in Jindabyne ready for this season. Also a big thanks to Toppa and Jaelle for all their hard work preparing the faciility for NSWIS athletes to use. This means that our training will be even better throughout the domestic winter. Also thanks to all the staff. The snowboard coaches, strength and conditioning coaches and physios are all working just as hard as us to ensure that we are successful in the future, which is just amazing and we really appreciate them as athletes.

Have a great season everyone.
All the best,

James
