SSA Weekend Watch | 7 February

Australian ski and snowboard riders will be busy again this weekend with the 2019 FIS Freestyle, Snowboard, Freeski World Championships continuing to ramp up and multiple World Cup events due to take place this weekend.

HALFPIPE FINALS, TEAM AERIALS AND MOGULS NEXT UP AT UTAH WORLDS

The 2019 FIS Freestyle, Snowboard, Freeski World Championships in Utah have already thrown up some great action, but it doesn’t stop there with over a dozen Aussies still yet to complete their events.

Scotty James and Kent Callister have qualified into the Men’s Snowboard Halfpipe finals in third and fourth place respectively, while Emily Arthur secured 18th place in the Ladies Snowboard Halfpipe qualifications.

The Aerials team have been performing well in their individual pursuits with Laura Peel narrowly missing out on a podium finish with fourth place in the Ladies Aerials super final. The Flying Kangaroos will now band together for the Team Aerials competition later today under lights.

Our mogul skiers are due to begin their qualifications runs on Friday in America, with Jakara Anthony and Matt Graham coming into the event off strong World Cup form.

Matt Cox will wrap up Australia’s competition when he steps out for his Snowboard Slopestyle event on Sunday 10 February.

ALPINE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Olympian Greta Small has a busy weekend ahead of her in Sweden at the 2019 FIS Alpine World Championships.

In her third World Championships, Small will be focused on her upcoming events including the Ladies Alpine Combined (8 Feb) and Ladies Downhill (10 Feb).

FELDBERG NEXT STOP FOR FIS SBX WORLD CUP

Multiple Aussie Snowboarders will hit the slopes in Feldberg (Germany) for their next stop on the FIS Snowboard Cross World Cup circuit

Six Aussie Snowboard Cross riders including PyeongChang silver medallist Jarryd Hughes and fellow Aussie teammates Alex Pullin, Cam Bolton, Adam Lambert, Adam Dickson, Josh Miller will take part in qualifying runs on Friday with finals going down on Saturday 9 February.

Only two more events in Baqueira Beret (Spain) and Veysonnaz (Switzerland) remain for the 2018/19 FIS Snowboard Cross World Cup circuit.

AUSSIE PARA ALPINE SKIERS BACK AT IT

Para Alpine skier Melissa Perrine and sighted guide Bobbi Kelly continue their medal winning ways at the Veysonnaz (Switzerland) Para Alpine World Cup stop.

Perrine and Kelly hit the podium for both their Super G races on day one of the four-day competition.

While fellow Australian’s Tori Pendergast achieved 4th place in her second race and Sam Tait was consistent finishing 8th in both of his Super G races.

Next up for the athletes is the third Super G race, followed by Giant Slalom.

BIG WHITE HOSTS PARA SNOWBOARD WORLD CUP

The first Para Snowboard World Cup races of 2019 landed at Big White (Canada) on Monday which saw Simon Patmore, Ben Tudhope and Sean Pollard back in action for their country.

All three riders put in solid performances which they will look to improve on when Competition returns to Big White on Thursday (7 February) with another round of snowboard-cross races.

While training has been cancelled ahead of the second races due to wind, all three will be eager to get back on snow.
