SSA Weekend Wrap | 4 February

The first of 23 Aussies were on show as part of the 2019 FIS Freestyle, Snowboard, Freeski World Championships, while the Para Alpine World Championships have wrapped up after two weeks of competitive skiing.

SNOWBOARD CROSS AND SKI CROSS GET UTAH WORLDS UNDERWAY

Five Aussie athletes competed over the weekend at Solitude Mountain Resort in some of the first events of the FIS Freestyle, Snowboard, Freeski World Championships in Utah.

Giving it their all, four Snowboard Cross male athletes and ski cross rider Sami-Kennedy Sim finished an intimidating course packed with all the elements as the ultimate test for riders.

MELISSA PERRINE ON TOP OF THE WORLD AFTER PARA ALPINE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Australia’s newest World Champions, Melissa Perrine together with sighted guide Bobbi Kelly, claimed the gold medal at the World Para Alpine Skiing Championships in the Women Super Combined.

Perrine and Kelli walked away with a swag of medals from the 2019 World Para Alpine Championships including:

  • Gold - Women's Super Combine Vision Impaired
  • Silver - Women's Super-G Vision Impaired
  • Silver – Women’s Giant Slalom Vision Impaired
  • Bronze - Women’s Slalom Vision Impaired

Triple Paralympian Mitchell Gourley also picked up a medal for Australia, claiming bronze in the men’s slalom, with the rest of the Aussie contingent performing strongly throughout the World Championships.

FROM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS TO WORLD CUP FOR PARA ALPINE SKIERS

Late last week World Para Alpine Skiing were forced to make changes to the upcoming World Cup races, issuing a statement that all races due to take place in Kranjska Gora, will be held in Veysonnaz, Switzelrand with an extended schedule, from 6-10 February.

Freshly crowned World Champions Mel Perrine & Bobbi Kelly as well as fellow teammates Sam Tait and Victoria Pendergast will be on Swiss snow looking to do well with three more World Cup stops remaining after Switzerland.

Veysonnaz is a returning World Cup host and sits on the edge of the biggest skiing area in Switzerland; The Four Vallees.
