Updated Alpine skiing selection criteria

Published Mon 24 Apr 2017

The 2017 Selection Policy and Criteria has moved away from a FIS point, world ranking system to a performance based system.

The National Team A/B/C criteria is based entirely on performances in major championships and bench mark events, as well as circuits of credit. Results from World Championships/ World Junior Championships/ World Cup/ Europa Cup/ North American Cup and Australia New Zealand Continental Cup will be considered.

The National Development Team and the National U19 Team (formerly U18) have performance based criteria, but also retain FIS point criteria.

The new criteria includes Ski Cross specific standards and will formerly recognise performing athletes as National Alpine Ski Team members based on the standard achieved.

Athletes will only be eligible for selection if they have taken part in the May 2017 physical testing.

Participation Requirements

New in 2017, all selected athletes must participate in the following events, relevant to their Team status, failure to do so will result in removal of team status:

Team status ALP/SX Com AUS NC/NJC National Skills Assessment Physical Testing 2x yearly
NAST A       x
NAST B       x
NAST C   x x x
NAST D x x x x
U 19 x x x x

The updated criteria can be found here

Following recommendations from the Club Program Director's meeting held in the Spring 2016, the timing of the National Children’s Squad has been pushed back to end of the Australian season. The selection criteria is currently under review.

Domestic Calendar and Race Entries

The 2017 Australian calendar is confirmed and can be found here

The expectation is that all Australian athletes competing in FIS events will support and take part in the FIS races held in Australia. SSA are required to submit all race entries to race organising committees of events outside of Australia. SSA will not submit entries for any events outside of Australia that clash with FIS events being held in Australia. It is critically important to the future of alpine ski racing in Australia that these events are supported.
