Snow Australia is saddened to hear of the passing of Colin Hackworth, a champion for snowsports in this country and an industry icon.

Colin was previously General Manager of Mount Hotham and later Falls Creek as well as spending two decades as CEO of the Australian Ski Areas Association.

His vision later led to personal investment in the Japanese ski industry and helping grow what has fast become one of the world’s most sought-after snow-tourism destinations.

Colin served on the independent Snow Australia Nominations Committee for many years and was always a valued source of knowledge and information.

In recent times, Colin was diagnosed with rapid onset motor neurone disease, however he kept skiing until his body eventually would no longer allow him to do what he loved.

Colin’s health unfortunately deteriorated in recent months before he passed away earlier this week.

“Colin was truly a pioneer, not just here in Australia but also in Japan,” said Michael Kennedy, Snow Australia CEO. “His vision and business acumen when it came to the snow industry is probably without parallel.

“Whether it was turning the pipedream of an airport at Mount Hotham into a reality or taking resorts like Hanazono to become the envy of the world, Colin’s achievements within snowsports have benefitted millions of people who would likely never know the impact he has had on the industry.

“On behalf of Snow Australia, I send our deepest condolences to Colin’s family and friends - he will truly be missed by many.”
