Volunteers sought for 2019 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships

Organisers of the 2019 International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine World Ski Championships in Åre are calling for volunteers to help run the event.

More than 1,600 volunteers are expected to assist in roles such as team hosting, crowd marshalling and course crew during the event, which is scheduled to take place in the Swedish ski resort from February 5 to 17.

In March, Åre hosted the 2017 Junior Alpine World Ski Championships, giving the city the opportunity to prepare for when it stages the senior edition of the event.

SSA Alpine Program Director Brad Wall was in Are with the Junior alpine skiing team for the Junior World Championships this year and had good expectations for the future event.

"Upgrades to the race hill and the finish stadium will ensure exciting races and an excellent spectator experience. Hopefully some of our young athletes who competed at the 2017 World Junior Championships will use that experience to propel them forward in 2019." Wall said.

Almost one-third of the volunteers will join the Organising Committee for the 2017-18 season’s FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Finals, which will serve as the test events.

They will also do so at the World Cup Stockholm City Event in January of next year and the FIS World Cup Finals in March 2018.

Those interested in volunteering can register here.

"Be sure to book early for the Audi test drive experience on the frozen lake, if fills up fast!" Wall added.

Åre is one of Scandinavia's leading ski resorts and held the 1954 and 2007 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships.

Cortina d'Ampezzo in Italy will host in 2021. Courchevel-Meribel in France will battle against Austrian resort Saalbach-Hinterglemm for the right to stage the 2023 edition.

The FIS is due to pick the winning bid at their 2018 Congress in Costa Navarino in Greece.
