First FIS event in Melbourne
Registration is now open for the Melbourne FIS Rollerski International on May 28-29. Held on the Yarra Bend loop within Studley Park, the event features a Sprint event on the Saturday afternoon and Distance events on the Sunday morning.
Competitors in the Open/FIS categories will race on supplied Swix Triac Rollerskis, using their own poles and boots. Juniors, Masters and other non-FIS athletes will need to supply their own rollerskis. All categories will race 1.0km for the Sprint event, while in the Open/Masters races on Sunday men race 10km and women 5km. The length of the U16 Junior Distance events are yet to be determined. Registration is open until Wednesday May 25.
Lake Mountain rollerski races cancelled
Unfortunately stricter rules around the closing of roads have led to the rollerski events originally scheduled at Lake Mountain for April 30 being cancelled. Lake Mountain had traditionally held the Victorian Rollerski Championship, but the event has not been held since 2019.
Vic Squad Training Opportunity
With no event at Lake Mountain on the last weekend of April, Snow Australia and the Victorian Squad are combining forces to run an impromptu training weekend in Melbourne instead. Activities will include a Park Run, rollerskiing and other ski-simulation activities. Junior skiers involved in the Vic Squad should reach out to coach Robbie Catto-Smith for more details, while any current or ex-national level adult skiers that might be interested in joining in should get in touch with Finn Marsland via fmarsland@snow.org.au or WhatsApp.
Mt Beauty Running Festival
A long-standing weekend training fixture on the National Team and Vic Squad calendar, the Mt Beauty Running Festival (formerly known as Half Marathon) is organised by the Kangaroo Hoppet and this year takes place on May 21. For any former participants that haven't taken part since Covid, a relatively new feature of the festival is a 14km trail run that takes in a fair amount of climbing and descents on either side of the East Kiewa River.
