Snowboard Community Update - June 2022

What a great start to the season. Snow conditions are fabulous, and I hope you have had an opportunity to ride.

I am delighted that a Junior FIS National Snowboard Cross Series is coming this winter across multiple resorts.
 
It will be the first Junior FIS National Series to be held in Australia and provides an ideal development opportunity for the next generation of snowboard cross athletes. The dates and details are below:

Registration links to the Mt. Buller, Hotham and Perisher dates will be done so through the resorts and available soon. 

Congratulations to 2-time Winter Olympian Belle Brockhoff who has been granted an education scholarship by the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). The AIS continues supporting athletes to be successful in sport, education and life, awarding more than $100,000 in education scholarships to another 41 athletes from 19 sports and 19 tertiary institutions.

A reminder that 2022 Snow Australia Memberships are now open – Please register so you can participate in any Snow Australia opportunities, as well as to be eligible to compete, get your Snowracer insurance, FIS membership and more. 

The Snowboard Racing Event Calendar is now live on the SB page on the Snow Australia website. This includes all events schedule for the Australian winter including the upcoming ANC’s being held in Hotham.

The National Junior working group have met twice in the last month to discuss a range of potential initiatives to increase participation in SBX and Alpine SB with further discussions to occur over the coming months. 

Don’t forget that there will be a community mixer to be held on Saturday 2 July 2022 at 5.30pm at the Jindabyne Bowling Club. This is where local athletes, parents, coaches and the like can come together socially and to discuss what is in store for the season ahead.

Snow Australia Announces New Junior FIS National Snowboard Cross Series

Snow Australia is excited to announce a new Junior FIS National Snowboard Cross Series, coming to the 2022 domestic snow season across multiple resorts.
 
It will be the first Junior FIS National Series to be held in Australia and provides an ideal development opportunity for the next generation of snowboard cross athletes.
 
Developing SBX racers will go head-to-head across four rounds in the series, held at Thredbo, Mt Buller, Hotham and Perisher Ski Resorts.

Brockhoff Receives AIS Education Scholarship to Support Athletes in Sport, Education and Life

The Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) continues supporting athletes to be successful in sport, education and life, awarding more than $100,000 in education scholarships to another 41 athletes from 19 sports and 19 tertiary institution including Winter Olympian Belle Brockhoff.

In its second year, the AIS Education Scholarship program has now awarded a total of more than $320,000 in scholarships to 118 athletes across 30 sports and 31 tertiary institutions. The program is possible thanks to the generous support of the John and Myriam Wylie Foundation.

ETP Camp Primes Next Generation of Elite Winter Athletes

Fifty-five up-and-coming snow sport athletes converged on the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra over the weekend for the Emerging Talent Program (ETP) Performance Camp.

With athletes across Snowboard Cross, Moguls, Park & Pipe, Cross Country, Alpine and Para snow sports coming together for the three-day program, the focus of the camp was to create an environment that promoted cross discipline engagement, whilst providing exposure to high performance talent development practices in a fun and motivating fashion.

Athletes participated in physical capability tests, fundamental movement screenings and aerobic tests, all designed to provide baseline measurements that athletes can look to improve on as their sporting careers develop.

Snowboard Committee Working Group

The Snowboarding Community Working Group hit the ground running recently at the successful Snow Australia Jindabyne Snow Sale.  

A stunning day on the mountains meant huge crowds travelled for the opening weekend and with queues around the block well before 8am and Steve Cooper on the microphone drumming up business, the SCWG BBQ was soon doing a roaring trade – so much so that despite a few runs to Nuggets to restock, we were out of food by noon!

Ben Tudhope Earns Top Honour at Paralympics Australia Awards

Snow Australia’s Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympic Team was celebrated at last night’s Paralympics Australia Awards in Sydney, with snowboarder Ben Tudhope receiving the highest honour of 2022 Paralympian of the Year.

The Beijing 2022 snowboard cross SB-LL2 bronze medallist was also named Male Athlete of the Year for 2022.

“I’m just a guy who loves snowboarding and wants to progress my skills as a snowboarder,” Tudhope said.

“I guess this is what comes along with it because I’m so determined and so motivated to actually continue to progress at something I love doing."
