Alpine Director Update - April 2025

Dear Alpine Community,

The northern winter is in its final stretch, and many athletes are focused on taking advantage of the last competitions of the season before a well-deserved break. Athletes are continuing to rack up personal bests and podiums in the closing FIS events of the season. This time of year, also sees the culmination of international children’s racing with athletes competing at La Scara in Val d’Isere FRA at the beginning of the month and Whistler Cup this weekend.

On the Ski Cross front Liam Michael finished 33rd at World Championships unfortunately missing out on qualification by one spot. He then travelled up to Idre Fjall SWE to compete in the last World Cup of the season where he finished 35th missing qualification by just +0.02 seconds. Liam has been agonizingly close many times this year to cracking the code and qualifying at World Cup.  While frustrating to get so close and just miss out, I think this can be a great lesson for us all in the perseverance and time it takes to develop to become one of the best.

Ski Cross also just finished up the World Junior Championships in Isola 2000 in France. Australia had 2024 Youth Olympians Duncan Cowan and Dakota Turner competing this year both individually and in the Team format. Duncan skied himself into 9th place, with Dakota in 13th and they combined to place Australia 10th in the Team competition. Dakota and Duncan both have 2 more years of eligibility left for World Juniors so we will be excited to see what the future holds. While attending World Junior Championships, Duncan missed the final NorAm Ski Cross of the season but had such a lead in the overall season standing with 5 wins from 6 starts that he was still crowned with the Overall NorAm Ski Cross title for 2025! This was the first time an Australian has won the NorAm overall title, so congratulations Duncan!!

For those athletes already home in Australia it is a time to enjoy the sunny days and start dreaming of the winter season to come. This is a great opportunity to start to think about what goals you may have for yourself for the coming season and start to prepare for those in advance. Taking advantage of any pre-season camps or dryland run by your club is a great way to get back into the swing of things and reunite with your friends from the snow. If you are looking to make strides with your fitness before the season starts, then use our SnowReady online fitness program to help get a leg up on the competition.

All the best,
Shawn
